ITUC Calls for COI on Burma


The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) campaign on Burma is one of their longest standing human and trade union rights campaigns. Since 1991 the United Nations General Assembly has been adopting resolutions on the situation in Burma. Twenty resolutions in all have been ignored by the dictatorship ruling the country.

The EU is currently drafting the text of the 21st United Nations General Assembly Resolution on Burma That resolution MUST contain a call for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry [COI] into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Burma.

The ITUC has now called on affiilates to act and ask governments to ensure that a Commission of Enquiry (COI) is included in the forthcoming EU resolution. A copy of their request can be found here.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has written to the Minister for Foreign Affairs regarding seeking the inclusion of a Commission of Inquiry in any forthcoming resolution.
