27 Aug 2013

Congress has written to the Colombian Ambassador to express in the strongest possible terms our outrage at the recent detention of the trade union leader Huber Ballesteros and to call for the necessary steps to be taken to ensure Mr Ballesteros is released without delay.  We have also requested Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore to raise the issue with the EU and with the Colombian authorities. More here. Congress Exectuive Council member and UNITE Regional Secretary for Ireland, Jimmy Kelly, took part in a July 2013, Justice For Colombia delegation to Colombia to speak with trade unionists, civil-society organisations, human rights lawyers, and government officials.  The delegation met with Mr Ballesteros - more on his arrest here.
