Congress Pays Tribute to Justice Mella Carroll

16 Jan 2006

In a tribute to the High Court Judge Mella Carroll who died on Sunday January 17th, the General Secretary of Congress, David Begg said:

"While extending the sympathy of the Irish Congress of Trades Unions to the family and friends of the late Ms. Justice Mella Carroll, I would like to acknowledge Mella's immense contribution to Irish workers and their families through her role as Chair of two major Commissions - the Commission on the Status of Women and the Nursing Commission. Both of these Commissions brought forward recommendations which have resulted in significant improvements in employment and public life opportunities for women in areas such as childcare, representation of women on public bodies and promotional and career opportunities.

Throughout her career she acted as an inspiring role model for women aspiring to promotion in their careers. She was the first woman appointed to the High court and the only woman Chair of the Bar Council. She has given extraordinary service to Irish People. May she rest in Peace."
