Congress Formally Agrees to Enter Talks

1 Feb 2006

Congress today (1 February) formally accepted a government invitation to enter new talks on a successor to Sustaining Progress.

The decision was taken at a special meeting of the Executive Council, called to consider the matter.

Speaking after the meeting, Congress General Secretary David Begg said the overarching goal of the new talks would be to ensure "that the country's many social deficits were addressed."

Mr Begg said that the problems besetting the health service would be a major priority for Congress.

In addition, the protection of decent standards of employment and proper enforcement of regulations were high on the agenda.

New talks will formally commence tomorrow afternoon (2 February), with a plenary session in Dublin Castle.
