Congress Expresses Sadness at Death of Michael O'Riordan

18 May 2006

Congress today (May 18) expressed sadness at the passing of Michael O'Riordan, the Spanish Civil War veteran and lifelong trade unionist.

Congress General Secretary David Begg paid tribute to Mr O'Riordan's commitment and selflessness, in the cause of working people in Ireland and across the world.

"There is a real sense of loss here," said Mr Begg. "Michael was someone who selflessly dedicated himself - often at great personal cost - to improving the lot of working people in Ireland and around the world. He was imbued with a genuine sense of 'internationalism' which, in many respects, is a core principle of the labour movement.

"His dedication saw him volunteer and serve with the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War.

"His contribution to the Irish labour movement was quite considerable and his presence will be missed. Congress would also like to take this opportunity to express condolences to surviving family members."
