Congress welcomes decision to allocate resources to Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann
28 Sep 2006
Congress today welcomed the decision of the Minister of Transport to allocate resources to Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann to expand their respective fleets. These additional resources will enable both companies to provide improved services to public transport users.
Congress also notes that the Government has decided to give to the soon to be established Dublin Transport Authority the power to procure additional bus services from the private sector. Congress will be seeking assurances and legislative provisions that will require private sector bus operators to observe the established employment standards in the sector.
The recently endorsed national pay agreement Towards 2016 contains commitments to consult with Congress on the provisions of the legislation to establish the Dublin Transport Authority. Congress Industrial Officer Liam Berney said "We will be pressing for the legislation that provides protection for employment standards and prevents a 'race to the bottom' in the sector".
Congress is currently examining the detail of today's announcement and will be consulting with the unions in the sector to develop a full response to the Government decision.
