NIB intervention in nurses dispute

9 Mar 2007

Joint Statement on behalf of the Government and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions

Following contacts between representatives of the Government and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, it has been agreed to put in place an intensive time-bound process of engagement, under the aegis of the National Implementation Body, to address the issues underpinning the current Nurses dispute, taking account of the relevant Labour Court recommendations. This initiative has been accepted by the Irish Nurses Organisation and the Psychiatric Nurses Association, and by Health Service employers.

It is agreed that the process which will involve senior representatives of both sides, will commence on 12 March, 2007 and last until 30 March, 2007, at the latest, and that in the meantime there will be no industrial action.

At the end of the three week period, or earlier if negotiations are completed, a detailed position statement will be prepared and presented to both sides for their consideration.
