Congress Delegation Visits Gaza Strip
9 Nov 2007
A high-level Congress delegation has crossed into the Gaza Strip as part of a fact-finding mission to investigate conditions in the Occupied Territories.
The delegation has been in the Middle East since Sunday, November 4, and has been pressing both the Israeli Government and Trade Union movement to respect the fundamental human rights of the Palestinian people and in particular those under siege in Gaza.
The delegation is on a fact finding mission as a result of a resolution passed at this year's ICTU Biennial Conference which called for political intervention, action on human rights and a boycott on Israeli goods.
The delegation comprises the current ICTU President Patricia McKeown, past presidents Peter McLoone and Brendan Mackin, Assistant General Secretary Peter Bunting and members of the ICTU Executive Council from SIPTU, the AMICUS Branch of Unite, MANDATE, UNISON and NIPSA, along with Trade Union Friends of Palestine.
Congress will issue a further statement on the conclusion of the visit.
