Congress says unions will now lodge pay claims with employers

2 Aug 2008

Congress confirmed today (August 2) that private sector unions will now begin lodging pay claims with individual employers following the breakdown of national pay negotiations.

Congress General Secretary David Begg said following a meeting of the Executive Council that there were no further talks planned or scheduled with government or employers and it was agreed that unions would now begin lodging pay claims with employers.

Mr Begg also confirmed that Congress officials and the Private Sector Committee would meet at the earliest opportunity in order to formulate strategy with regard to pay claims and improved terms and conditions.

In particular he stressed that Congress would continue to pursue its objectives in protecting the low paid, combating exploitation and defending the right to engage in collective bargaining.
