Bob Doyle, 1916-2009

27 Jan 2009

Congress has paid tribute to the late Bob Doyle, the last surviving Irish combatant on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. Bob Doyle, who was born in Dublin in 1916, joined the International Brigade in December 1937 in order to help defend the Republican government against the Fascist uprising led by General Franco. In 2008, Bob was included in a photography exhibition that focused on surviving members of the anti-Fascist struggle in Spain. The exhibition was organised by photographer Pablo Vazquez and, with financial support from Congress, toured Ireland during 2008. A selection of the photographs can be viewed here, including Bob Doyle's own portrait (no. 14).
