Ahead of World Press Freedom Day and as Ireland drops in the Press Freedom rankings, NUJ Acting General Secretary Seamus Dooley says yes, there is a crisis in the media and yes, we should be worried
Those who lament the passing of the traditional newspaper are in danger of sounding like a blacksmith bemoaning the arrival of the automobile.
The digital revolution has swept away old certainties and challenged our assumptions about ‘news’.The fact that everyone can become a reporter is empowering. No longer do you have to buy ink by the barrel in order to exercise power and influence.

NUJ IRISH SECRETARY SEAMUS DOOLEY ASKS WHY THE GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED TO TACKLE MEDIA MONOPOLIES
While it is now Congress policy to support the establishment of a Commission on the Future of the Media in Ireland, I am not naïve enough to believe that it will top the agenda at many union meetings.
This follows the passing of a motion from the NUJ at Biennial Delegate Conference 2015, in July.
Concepts of media diversity and plurality seem removed from the lives of most citizens but the ownership and control of the media - the shaping of news and public opinion - has a very direct impact on all of us.

Who Remembers Charlie Hebdo?

Every morning I click on the International Federation of Journalists’ website.
On the top right hand corner there’s a black countdown clock. It details the number of journalists and media staff killed so far this year.
As I write – on January 29 - that number stands at 22.
This week my NUJ colleague Jim Boumelha, President of the IFJ condemned the brutal murder of Mexican journalist Moises Sanchez Cerezo, from the town of Medellín de Bravo, in the state of Veracruz.
