€114,816 to the Haiti Emergency Campaign

CWU donated an outstanding €90,000
Earlier this year the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) launched a solidarity campaign in response to the earthquake in Haiti which took place in January. This appeal for humanitarian support for victims is in cooperation with its regional organization for the Americas (TUCA).Trade Unions around the world mobilised support on an extraordinary scale.
Congress itself has contributed €114,816 in the Haiti Emergency Campaign. This fund will be used for the reconstruction of Haiti and support to the Haitian trade union movement. CWU donated an outstanding €90,000 to this Campaign along with important contributions from NIPSA, PSEU,INTO, MANDATE and UNISON.Other unions such as IMPACT also contributed (50,000) to the Haiti emergency work through various NGO's such as Concern.
The ITUC has called for a major international aid mobilisation for the country's devastated infrastructure and economy with social protection, creation of decent work and respect for workers rights, including support to the Haitian trade union movemnet at the top of the agenda in for Haiti's reconstruction.
A special trade union summit on Haiti organised by the ITUC, TUCA and Global Union Federations is held in the Dominican Republic on the 8th-10th of April.
