Christmas Cards for Colombia
Issued on November 29, 2012 at 05:01 PM
Justice for Colombia [Ireland] is inviting everyone to send a greeting card to Omar Alfonso Combita this Christmas to express our solidarity.
Omar is a teacher currently being held without trial since October 2011 accused of "rebellion" and more details of the ongoing campaign can be found here.
Not only is it terribly difficult for prisoners to survive imprisonment due to the horrendous conditions and without the opportunity to defend themselves in a court of law, but many times the prison authorities can add to their mental torture and anguish. From talking to recently released political prisoners, receiving a message of solidarity from across the world, particularly at Christmas time, provides a great psychological boost and lets the individual know that somewhere their story is being told, someone is listening and they have not been forgotten.
This Christmas season when you are sitting comfortably writing your cards and thinking of your own family, spare a thought for Omar and address one of those cards to him.
This campaign will be co-ordinated through the Global Solidarity Officer in Congress and forwarded on in groups so please send us in any cards for Omar, addressed to Justice For Colombia, Christmas Card Appeal, ICTU, 31-32 Parnell Square, Dublin 1.
Your support this Christmas is greatly appreciated and remember you can always support the work of JFC through the year by signing up for an email alert about our work and/or affiliating as an individual member.
