UPDATE - September 2015: Trade Union Roadmap for Nepal Reconstruction Backed by Government. This followed 2 days of meetings in Nepal, to which the President of Congress, Brian Campfield sent the following message of solidarity:

"The delegates to the 7th annual Global Solidarity Summer School of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (28/29 August, Cork) wish to send their solidarity to the people of Nepal - and specifically to the Nepal Trade Union Congress.  We commend you on your efforts in the reconstruction of your country and urge the authorities to ensure that you have a voice in the decision making of the reconstruction plan and distribution of funds.  It is also imperative that any reconstruction programme involves the creation of jobs under decent working conditions for all.  We will be keeping abreast of the situation from afar through our contacts in the ITUC and be assured of our ongoing solidarity." ENDS

Congress is requesting affiliates, union members and the general public to make donations to the appeals set up by the Nepal Trades Union Congress (NTUC), Global Unions (UNI, PSI, BWI and EI), GEFONT, or by visiting the Irish NGO site www.howyoucanhelp.ie  to see how your donations can have the highest impact in terms of assiting victims of the Earthquake in Nepal. 13 Irish Agencies are actively assisting on the ground in Nepal.

The earthquake which struck Nepal on the morning of 25 April 2015 has left a trail of destruction. According to latest estimates, it caused over 7,300 deaths and injured some 15,000 people in one of the poorest countries in Asia. Massive damage has been caused to the country’s underdeveloped, poorly maintained infrastructure and property. Many buildings including those providing vital public services and private dwellings in the capital Kathmandu as well as in surrounding villages were reduced to rubble. Thousands have been made homeless and are in dire need of food, clothes, shelter and essential medicines. An outbreak of epidemics is also feared due to the lack of potable water and poor sanitation.
