Shannonbridge protest march
3 Feb 2020
Congress General Secretary Patricia King marched in solidary with over 500 people in Shannonbridge County Offaly on Saturday last.
Bord na Móna workers have called for investment in “Just Transition” measures such as renewable energy production and home insulation to assist with the switch to a low carbon economy, but said that the Government had failed to deliver on the substance of the project so far.
Patricia King said she is “very concerned that there is a lack of energy about “Just Transition and decent work. We are not going to have workers sacrificed in terms of job losses with no alternative decent employment forthcoming for them”, she said
There were calls on election candidates to make the so-called "Just Transition" to a low carbon economy a priority in the next Dáil. The harvesting of peat will cease in 2027 but two peat burning stations will be closed by the ESB at the end of the year.
