Insecure Work, Insecure Lives

30 April 2012, 18:00 - 20:00

Public talk on the growth of insecure and precarious work across the globe, as part of the May Day 2012 Festival.

Professor Guy Standing of Bath University is an acknowledged expert in this area and the author of The Precariat (Bloomsbury 2011).

"The Precariat is a class in the making, approaching a consciousness of common vulnerability. It consists not just of everybody in insecure jobs - though many are temps, part-timers, in call centres or in outsourced arrangements. The precariat consists of those who feel their lives and identities are made up of disjointed bits, in which they cannot construct a desirable narrative or build a career, combining forms of work and labour, play and leisure in a sustainable way."

The talk will be introduced by Siptu's Ethel Buckley and chaired by John Douglas of Mandate.

Start time 6pm, places are limited. Doors open at 5.40pm
