FRIDAY BRIEFING: Centenary of First Dáil
15 February 2019, 10:30 - 12:30
The February Friday Briefing will celebrate the Centenary of the First Dáil. The first public sitting of the Dáil was held in The Mansion House, Dublin on 21 January 1919.
The original draft of the Democratic Programme presented to the First Dáil was very different from the version that was eventually adopted. Although still the most radical document ever adopted by Dáil Eireann, the changes insisted up by the Irish Republican Brotherhood provided an early indication that the radical vision envisaged by the 1916 leaders was already being overshadowed by a more conservative vision of the future.
Women also played a crucial role in the events surrounding the first Dáil and had frequently been at the forefront of those years of struggle.
The Briefing will be delivered by Padraig Yeates, Trade Unionist and Historial, and Theresa Moriarty, Honorary President of the Irish Labour History Society.
There are a limited amount of places at the briefing, and booking is essential with firstname.lastname@example.org
