The Irish Congress of Trade Unions welcomes the amendment to the Payment of Wages Act to bring clarity around the issue of tips for hospitality workers.
“The legislation which will come into effect on 1st December 2022 will give workers clearer rights around the issue of tips, give more clarity for customers, particularly those paying electronically, and will require employers to display their policies. This has been an important campaign waged by workers in the sector and unions. It is particularly important that the legislation comes into effect next month in anticipation of a busy Christmas season.
However, the most significant benefit to workers in the hospitality sector and indeed all sectors of the economy is the right to collective bargaining.
We in the ICTU look forward to the transposition of the EU Directive on Adequate Minimum Wages combined with legislation for the LEEF High Lebel Group Report on industrial relations in Ireland in 2023 which will bring address this crucial issue,” concluded Owen Reidy, Congress General Secretary.
Clement Shevlin, of One Galway, acknowledged the support of ICTU in the fight for better working conditions, saying 'the tipping law shouldn't be the end of improvements for the hospitality sector. For the lowest-paid workers in our economy, there is a lot more which can be done, starting with a living wage, and better terms, and conditions so that they can build sustainable careers'.
