The Irish Congress of Trade Unions Education Group of Unions today welcomed publication of the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report, which revealed that 15 year old students here rank among the top performers in reading across the 81 countries evaluated.
The chair of the Congress Education Group, Frank Jones, said: "Ireland's sustained excellence in global rankings for mathematics and science is a testament to the unwavering commitment and hard work of the individuals contributing to our education system. This achievement is not an accident, but a result of the dedication shown by educators, administrators and support staff.
"As we celebrate these accomplishments, it is crucial to recognise the critical role of our educators and to support their continued success. We call upon the Government to prioritise measures that enhance the appeal of the teaching profession. Retaining current teaching staff and attracting new talent is paramount to ensuring that vacancies are filled and our education system continues to thrive.
"Investing in the teaching profession, both in terms of remuneration and professional development will not only acknowledge the outstanding contributions of our educators but also solidify Ireland's position as a global leader.
