The Irish Congress of Trade Unions will today (2nd September 2025) host a national conference addressing anti-racism in the workplace and beyond.
Now in its second year, the conference is run by Stronger Together Anti-Racist Workplaces and Trade Unions Project, which supports ICTU's affiliated membership of over 800,000 working people in implementing comprehensive anti-racism strategies.
Speakers at the conference will include Minister of State for Migration Colm Brophy; Special Rapporteur on Racism Dr Ebun Joseph; and Chief Commissioner for Human Rights and Equality, Liam Herrick. There will also be discussion on strategies for resistance, and progress on ethnic minority leadership.
Speaking before the event, ICTU General Secretary Owen Reidy commented:
Today's conference represents an important milestone in our commitment to workplace equality. Trade unions must be at the forefront of tackling discrimination, championing unity over division, and ensure that racism is not tolerated in any professional environment.
Minister of State for Migration Colm Brophy commented:
The Government strongly condemns all forms of racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia and intolerance and we are determined to stamp out hate-motivated crimes and protect vulnerable communities. Taking proactive, affirmative steps are essential in responding to and combatting racism, and projects like this are a very important part of that process.
Commenting on the event, Anti-Racism Workplaces and Trade Unions Coordinator, Dr David Carroll stated:
With the ‘Stronger Together’ project now in its second year, the trade union movement demonstrates remarkable determination to address racism head-on. Our initiatives have attracted enthusiastic participation from trade union representatives and members committed to confronting racism and all manifestations of prejudice.
