Raise the Roof to Hold Eviction Ban Protest at Dáil The Raise the Roof housing campaign group will hold a protest event outside the Dáil on Thursday, March 30, from 12.30 pm-1.30 pm, to highlight the end of the Eviction Ban and the potentially disastrous impact on thousands of individuals and families in the rental sector. Thursday, March 30 is the last day of this Dáil term before the ban is lifted on April 1.
The Raise the Roof campaign group wrote to all TDs last week pointing out that the decision to end the ban “without first putting in place the measures needed to prevent people being forced into homelessness, is both profoundly wrong and wholly indefensible.
“This deeply troubling decision has now placed thousands of households in immediate danger of being forced into homelessness…single people, young couples, families with children, extended families, and older people.”
Raise the Roof called for the ban to be extended and to “guarantee that it will be kept in place until Government has introduced the suite of measures and safeguards required to ensure that no family or individual will be forced into homelessness when a tenancy ends.”
The Raise the Roof event will focus on civil society and the impact lifting the eviction ban will have on women, students, Travellers, children, families, young workers and many others.
Among the groups present at the March 30 event will be representatives of the National Women’s Council (NWCI), the Irish Traveller Movement (ITM), Simon, Focus Ireland, the Irish Refugee Council (IRC) the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and others.
In addition, the protest will feature a range of trade unions, including Congress, Siptu, Fórsa, Mandate, Unite, Communication Workers’ Union (CWU), Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO), Financial Services Union (FSU), and others. Representatives from the main opposition political parties will also be in attendance.
