The Irish Congress of Trade Unions is proud to announce the Rally for Unity and Hope will take place as planned this Saturday, 23 November, at 1pm at the iconic Larkin Statue on O’Connell Street, Dublin 1.
The trade union movement is founded on a simple principle: unity strengthens us all. We are committed to fighting for decent jobs, affordable homes, and access to essential services for all people, regardless of their background or birthplace. Our communities thrive because of the contributions of those who have made Ireland their home, whether born here or abroad.
However, our shared values are under threat. A small but vocal group of far-right extremists are exploiting fear and misinformation to divide us, targeting workers in libraries, schools, public transport, and retail. They seek to undermine solidarity by scapegoating vulnerable groups, distracting from the real issues and failures of those in power.
This rally is part of our response. It is a call to action for all who believe in an Ireland built on respect, compassion, and hope.
Congress General Secretary Owen Reidy emphasised the significance of the rally:
“Now, more than ever, we need to come together. This rally is a call to all who believe in building a society rooted in unity, respect, hope, and decent, secure jobs, affordable homes, and better GP and hospital care. As a movement, we hold those in power responsible for delivering what we all need to thrive.
It’s a reminder that every person who lives and works here, regardless of where they come from, is part of our community and deserves to feel safe and valued. We stand up against those who seek to divide us and spread hate in our communities and workplaces. Where they sow division, we stand for unity.
I am calling for those in the trade union movement to ensure a strong presence at this rally, and for all unions to stand together in solidarity. Join us as we rally to show our strength, unity, and power.”
Le Chéile spokesperson Ailbhe Smyth voiced concerns about the far right:
“The rise of far-right extremist groups in Ireland is deeply disturbing. Cynical political actors are seeking to spread racism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia in our communities. They are working to divide us and roll back hard-won freedoms for their own gain.
We cannot allow this virulent hatred to take root in our society. We must stand together in solidarity with those targeted by the far right, particularly the frontline workers who have been harassed and intimidated. Together, we can ensure that hatred has no place in our society.”
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions invites all trade unionists, activists, and members of the public to join the rally and stand together in a collective show of strength and unity.
