Coalition calls for affordable housing solutions as Cork workers face unprecedented housing crisis
A broad coalition of trade unions, civil society groups, and political parties will march through Cork city on June 21st to demand urgent government action on the deepening housing crisis.
The demonstration, organised under the 'Raise the Roof' campaign, will begin at 2pm at the National Monument on Grand Parade.
Announcing the protest, Joe Kelly from the Cork Council of Trade Unions, said:
"Working people in Cork are being priced out of any possibility to rent never mind buy a property. A whole generation of young workers locked out of housing, stuck in the back bedroom of their parents' house, some of whom are now parents themselves, contemplating emigration. The key message from this trade union led protest is that we need emergency action on housing now."
The protest comes as the housing crisis continues to worsen across Cork and Ireland, with house prices and rents spiraling beyond the reach of ordinary workers, homelessness increasing, and thousands of homes sitting vacant while families struggle to find accommodation.
In Cork City alone there are over 300 vacant council houses.
The coalition is demanding immediate action including:
- Delivery of housing targets in line with the Housing Commission Report
- Increased State-role in the delivery of housing
- Urgent action to end the scandal of over 300 vacant council houses in Cork
- Move to a cost-rental model for 20% of all housing
- Establishment of a new, secure tenancy model for renters
