May Day / Minimum Wage @ 25 seminar material

April 30, 2025
NMW

May Day is an important day in the trade union calendar with lots of events vying for your attention. We are honoured so many of you chose to join us to mark the 25th anniversary of Ireland's minimum wage.

When our committee of private sector unions started to plan this event it was intended it would be a look back on a piece of recent trade union history. However, the new government's broken promise to turn the minimum wage into a living wage from 2026 made it a very topical discussion for trade unionists and our allies.

We had a range of speakers and topics to talk us through the minimum wage’s beginnings up to the present day and to reflect on its impact on workers, employers and, indeed, on unions organising in low paying sectors. Their slides can we viewed here.
